Southampton Football Club is a professional soccer club that competes in the English Premier League (EPL), the top league in English soccer. The club was founded in 1885 and was nicknamed “The Saints” because of their long history with the church. Southampton has a longstanding rivalry with Portsmouth known as the South Coast derby, but Portsmouth are currently playing in League One. Southampton was one of the original 22 members of the English Premier League and, despite never finishing higher than 8th, stayed in the top division until a demotion following the 2004-2005 season. The club played in both the Championship and League One during that time but was promoted back to the EPL in 2012-2013. Southampton’s highest finish since that time came in 2015-2016 when they finished 6th in the EPL. The club was runner-up for the FA Cup in 2002-2003 and runner up for the League Cup in 2016-2017. They have yet to appear in the Championship League but have two appearances in the Europa League since 1992. Southampton plays its home matches at St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton, England. The stadium, which opened in 2001, has a seating capacity of 32,505.
