Watford Football Club is a professional soccer club that competes in the English Premier League (EPL), the top league in English soccer. The club was founded in 1898 and did not make it into the top division of English soccer until 1982. Watford was not one of the founding members of the EPL in 1992 but made their first appearance in the league in 1999-2000. That season, Watford finished 20th in the EPL and was again demoted. They spent six seasons in the Championship (formerly Division 1) before another promotion and subsequent demotion for again finishing 20th. Finally, in 2015-2016, Watford was promoted back to the EPL where they have stayed, finishing 13th, 17th, 14th, and 11th in consecutive seasons. Watford was the runner-up in the 2018-2019 FA Cup where they lost to Manchester City. This is the farthest the club has gone in any English tournament since 1992. Watford plays its home matches at Vicarage Road in Hertfordshire, England. The stadium opened in 1922 and seats 22,220 people. The stadium is currently under construction and will hold around 30,000 people by 2021.
