Newcastle United Football Club is a professional soccer club that competes in the English Premier League (EPL), the top league in English soccer. The club was founded in 1892 as a member of The Football League. Since their founding, they have won the ninth most trophies of any English soccer club. Newcastle was not one of the original 22 teams in the EPL but was promoted for the 1993-1994 season. The club had great early success finishing 3rd, 6th, 2nd, and 2nd consecutively from 1993 to 1997. But, the club has finished higher than 10th just four times since then. They were even demoted to the Championship twice, once in 2009-2010 and once in 2016-2017. Newcastle won the Championship both years and were immediately promoted back up to the EPL. Since 1992, Newcastle has been the runner up for the FA Cup title twice, and they have qualified for the UEFA Championship League three times. The club has played their home matches at St. James’ Park in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, since 1892. The stadium was expanded in 1998 and now has a seating capacity of 52,388.
