History

Roulette is one of the oldest casino games and continues to be one of the most popular games worldwide. The game was created in France during the 18th century and spread all across Europe and the United States in the 19th century. It is one of the simplest games at the casino as it requires the bettor to select some variation of a number (or numbers), color, odd or even, or high or low numbers. Yet, it is one of the most exciting because of its fast pace and the fact that bettors of all skill levels can play.

How To Play

There are two main types of roulette found at most casinos: European and American. European roulette is also known as single zero while American roulette is also known as double zero. In single zero roulette, there is a spinning wheel with 37 numbered slots. The numbers are listed from 0-36 (not in that order), and the colors are split between red and black except for the 0 slot which is green. The single zero wheel is split as follows: 0-32-15-19-4-21-2-25-17-34-6-27-13-36-11-30-8-23-10-5-24-16-33-1-20-14-31-9-22-18-29-7-28-12-35-3-26

In double zero roulette, there is a spinning wheel with 38 numbered slots. The numbers are listed from 0-36 (not in that order) with the addition of a 00, and the colors are split between red and black except for the 0 and 00 slot which is green. The double zero wheel is split as follows: 0-28-9-26-30-11-7-20-32-17-5-22-34-15-3-24-36-13-1-00-27-10-25-29-12-8-19-31-18-6-21-33-16-4-23-35-14-2. In all versions of roulette, in the number ranges from 1 to 10 and 19 to 28, the odd numbers are red and even are black. In the number ranges from 11 to 18 and 29 to 36, the odd numbers are black and even are red.

A white ball is placed on the wheel, and the wheel is spun by the dealer to start each round of roulette. A bettor can decide to bet on a specific number or a range of numbers, the color of the number that the ball will land on, whether the number will be odd or even, or if the number will be high (19-36) or low (1-18). The 0 and 00 are considered “house numbers” in which the dealer wins. Simple bets such as black or red will typically offer a one to one payout where the bettor will win the same amount that they bet. Higher odds are given out to bets with a lower chance of winning like picking a specific number or group of numbers. Types of Bets

Inside Bets

Straight up: This is a bet on a single number on the board and holds a 35 to 1 payout. For example, a $10 bet wins an additional $350.

Split: This is a bet on two neighboring squares and holds a 17 to 1 payout. For example, a $10 bet wins an additional $170.

Street: This is a bet on three neighboring numbers and holds an 11 to 1 payout. For example, a $10 bet wins an additional $110.

Six line: This is a bet on two street bets which would be six neighboring numbers and holds a payout of 5 to 1. For example, a $10 bet wins an additional $50. 

Corner: This is a bet on four neighboring squares and holds a payout of 8 to 1. For example, a $10 bet wins an additional $80.

Outside Bets

Dozens: This is a bet on a number range between 1-12, 13-24, or 25-36 and holds a payout of 2 to 1. For example, a $10 bet wins an additional $20.

Colors: This is a bet on either red or black and holds a payout of 1 to 1. For example, a $10 bet wins an additional $10.

Odd and Even: This is a bet on the number to be either an odd or an even and holds a payout of 1 to 1. For example, a $10 bet wins an additional $10.

High and Low: This is a bet on either the number range 1 to 18 or the number range 19-36 and holds a payout of 1 to 1. For example, a $10 bet wins an additional $10.

Columns: This is a bet on a specific column of 12 numbers and holds a payout of 2 to 1. For example, a $10 bet wins an additional $20.

Bonus Roulette

Bonus roulette is a version of roulette specific to playing online. It has all of the same rules as American roulette but allows the player to attain bonuses the longer that they play. If five reds are spun in a row in an online game of American roulette, the player receives a bonus equivalent to the smallest bet placed on the table over those five spins.
